Sometimes Home Health Means More Than Healthcare

One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that home health isn’t just about treating a diagnosis. It’s about seeing the whole person.
Recently, one of our longtime patients, Maria, reminded me exactly why that matters.
Maria has been part of the Equilibrio family for the past two years. She faces significant mobility challenges, has difficulty walking, and depends on a walker or wheelchair to safely move around her home. Despite everything she deals with, she always greets our team with a smile—and she’s never far from talking about her best friend, her dog.
When we arrived for a visit recently, I found Maria outside in her wheelchair trying to repair a section of her backyard fence that had fallen apart.
As a physical therapist, I immediately saw what she didn’t.
She wasn’t just trying to fix a fence. She was putting herself at risk of a serious fall.
For someone with poor balance and limited mobility, trying to lift, pull, or stabilize a damaged fence can easily lead to an injury that could undo months of progress. The fence itself had become unstable enough that it also posed a danger to anyone nearby—including the dog she was trying so hard to protect.
The reason she was out there was simple.
Maria can’t safely walk her dog, so her fenced backyard is the only place her companion can safely run, play, and enjoy being outside. When the fence broke, she didn’t see it as a home repair project. She saw it as protecting a member of her family.
Watching her struggle to fix it herself was a moment our team won’t forget.
Healthcare often focuses on medications, diagnoses, and treatment plans. Those things matter. But sometimes the biggest barrier to someone’s health isn’t medical at all—it’s something as simple as a broken fence, a loose step, or a lack of support at home.
That’s why we decided to step in.
Our team launched a GoFundMe campaign to help replace Maria’s fence so she can safely enjoy her home without risking another injury, and so her dog can continue to be the companion that’s brought her so much comfort.
It’s a reminder that caring for patients doesn’t always end when the visit is over.
Sometimes the most meaningful care happens outside the treatment plan.
